Xbox 360 Price Drop? Really?

I know that nobody saw this coming - sales flyers - what? Ahem - Today, we are officially announcing the price drop of the Xbox 360.

Beginning Sept. 5, the estimated prices for the Xbox 360 SKUs will be:

360 Arcade: $199.99

Xbox 360: $299.99

Xbox 360 Elite: $399.99

With the new dash coming soon and all of the cool things that you'll be able to do with friends online, now's the perfect time to pick one up either for yourself or someone you want to keep in touch with.

Shane Kim said at the game developer summit in Vancouver that the Wii will not always have a lower price than the Xbox 360.

I guess no word if the new shipments of system after the price drop will be Jasper motherboards or just the Falcon motherboard designs with the underside memory. I know.. you can’t talk about hardware specs or manufacturing.

I really want to pick up a new Xbox 360 Arcade for $199 before the release of Rock Band 2. It will be fascinating to see how many new Xbox 360 systems they sell this winter.

I did the obligatory mini focus group testing of this price point with my 10 year old cousins (and more importantly, their parents) who had recently bought a Wii, and they were VERY excited about a $199 Xbox. They even showed some regret over their recent Wii purchase when I told them a $199 360 was coming.

Hope to see that same sort of reaction on a much larger scale. I'm really hoping MS will scream this news from the rooftops via ads, press, or literally screaming it from rooftops.

Great for the new customers... and some of us who would like to expand our entertainment to every room in the house, or at least two locations... you know, backup from princess wife-y.

I'll only add that I wish that was the price I paid when the 360 launched back in '05. I wonder what the market would be if it did.

The Arcade Sku really needs to go away.

Maybe a $199 20GB verision, $299 60 GB Version, and the $399 Elite?

I dont know. The Arcade Sku really feels like a sucker buy for people who dont know that they should really be buying the core version. =\

I dunno I have a hard drive and I need a new 360 so an Arcade would be perfect for me. I also know my girlfriends friend who just wants to play Fable 2 so an Arcade SKU would be perfect for her. I think there is a place for a 199 Arcade SKU and if people would not buy it they would not sell it. There are very smart people with MBAs and big excel spreadsheets that are crunching the numbers as to what kind of Xbox bundles people will buy at what price.

Bottom line is that there is a market for the Arcade, and it's bigger than you think. All the folk that are used to simple 'throw in a disk, save onto memory cards' from last generation will be at home with that model.

They can find out about other stuff after that, then buy the starter kit for a decent price, or not.
