I'm lucky I never got a blu-ray or HD-DVD my pc plays them both :)

Still too expensive, considering it relies on a reliable console to function (or Vista, I suppose ... boo).

I saw another blog post that said Amazon are offering it at $80 with free HD-dvds too!!!

Hope we get a similar price drop in the UK.

What with the recent announcements about HD-dvd and film companies I'm wondering if we can expect a BluRay addon drive in the near future!?

The funny thing that might happen is that all the people that bought the HD-DVD players between this sale and the superbowl $129.00 standalones might start going out and buying HD-DVD's. Sales == Studio Support. It won't be enough for HD-DVD to go over the top, but it will show that HD-DVD is not going down without a fight  to a company that is only winning because they forced their blu-ray players on the gaming community and bought out the studio support.  Formats should be chosen by the end-user depending on what features they want. Not by companies that want to make a $. It's simple supply and demand.

i was tempted to buy it this morning for the low price of $80 from Amazon , but i said no.

Why? , well HD-DVD currently only has 2 studios , half of the free movies are old movies instead of new ones so they aren't HD Movies but movies with their resolution increased, my XBox360 doesn't output DTS with DTS DVD's so i doubt it will with the HD-DVD add-on while a regular DVD player does a better job and outputs DTS. thanks but no thanks , ill wait until one of the two formats wins and then make my decision.

Xbox 360 does indeed output DTS surround sound, you just have to set it on the DVD Menu, not the 360 menu.

Finally!! Maybe I'll finally take sides in the HD DVD battle. Oh wait I have a PS3 too so I don't care who win ;)

Oh dear oh dear, misinformation again I see.

Old movies ARE in HD, how else do you think they showed them in the cinema?  You didn't think the cinema was 640x480 did you?  

Film translates (depending on the quality of the print) up to as high as ~4000x2000, far higher resolution than Blu-ray or HD DVD.  Anything that claims to be shot in HD purely means it was shot DIGITALLY in a HD resolution.  Technically that is inferior to film but potentially a lot cheaper and faster due to not needing to scan every frame of the film into a computer before editing.

As others have said, the 360 most certainly outputs DTS for DVD and HD-DVD.  However if your receiver doesn't support DTS digitally (many people expect the DVD player to output 5.1 analog to use cheaper surround kit) then that's an entirely different problem and no fault of the 360.

No, the 360 isn't quite as good as a standalone HD player.  But its VERY affordable and for people like me who my surround kit only takes digital inputs not analog, DTS is perfectly sufficient.  The 360 HD DVD still looks and sounds a LOT better than regular DVDs and if they release a Blu-ray drive I will be sure to buy that too.  If they don't, I will probably get a PC drive and possibly a PS3 later on.  Right now though, there is not enough material I want on Blu-ray to bother with it.

This is a great deal and will hopefully encourage others to jump in. I know people will say its dead why bother, but movies are still being released for the format, and they will be for a while. And at this price you really can't go wrong, its not like they priced it at $300 or anything.

This pretty much equals the cost of 2 bundled in games, so mabye we could see a drive packaged into the Xbox's packaging. (Meaning its not internal, just in the same box the 360 is in).
