I REALLY like Project Sylpheed, it reminds me of those old space flight games such as Wing Commander, and X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter.

The game has very well-done anime-style cutscenes between the missions filling you in on the storyline and plot.  Yeah...  I skipped every one of those because I have the attention span of a gnat.  My apologizes to the team of animators and artists who likely slaved away for months on those cutscenes only to have me skip all of them.

Even w/o knowing the story - the game is a blast!  I have NO CLUE why I'm shooting down these guys, but man is it fun!

Project Sylpheed: Arc of Deception

The reason for the blog post, however, is that I got this in my email inbox, and I thought I'd pass it along for those who are interested.  Before getting to the email, I'll give some of my tips and tricks.

  • When starting a mission, I always hit LT+RT to get into match-speed mode, so I don't have to worry about running into my enemies when I have them targeted.  I still manually speed-up to get out of the heavy fire, but it's one less thing to worry about.
  • The 2nd thing I do in a mission is to set my team-mates to Break and Attack because I am so awesome I don't really need them anyway.  If I have to take out a huge ship I have all my wingmen attack that large enemy and I take care of everything else.
  • Use advanced moves - Holding B left stick left/right will do a barrel roll.  You can hold B and hit left/right/left/right to avoid fire when closing range on big destroyer ships.
  • Use advanced moves - If someone flies past you hold B and push up on the left stick, you will do a 180 and be able to continue the fight.

Ok, onto the tips email.

Subj:     “Project Sylpheed” – Tips and Tricks

With the Xbox 360 exclusive “Project Sylpheed” now available on store shelves, we must brief our pilots on how they can best defend the galaxy from the evil ADAN forces. Several simple but vital tips and tricks to keep in mind while piloting the Delta Saber include determining the firing range, understanding the arsenal, avoiding collisions, and using the afterburner and power cut technique.

Targeting enemy aircraft that are too far away is ineffective and wastes ammunition. Make it count by using the range finder to determine distances before firing. Understanding the Delta Saber’s arsenal is equally important as some multipurpose missiles are designed to target fighters, but are useless against ships. Avoiding collisions sounds simple enough, but at high speeds, pilots cannot come to a sudden stop. Practice evasive maneuvers such as side rolls or 180-degree turns to avoid careening toward a cruiser.

Using the afterburner and power cut technique are also very effective. Activate the afterburner to pull away from a swarm of enemies, and then swing around with a 180-degree turn to target them. But be warned, the afterburner will not function when shields are depleted. Change directions during a power cut and continue moving on inertia alone to point the nose of a ship toward an enemy aircraft and score multiple hits.

“Project Sylpheed” is developed by Game Arts and SETA Corporation exclusively for the Xbox 360 console, and published by Microsoft and Square Enix. The information provided in this briefing can be used for all your upcoming coverage needs.
