LIVE and Call of Duty 4

I have gotten a few calls, and IMs today asking what's going on with Activision's Call of Duty 4, and cross-platform play. Most folks are pointing to a specific IGN interview.

I sent an email to Kevin Unangst, Global Director, Games for Windows, and he replied, saying:

"Given the incredible success of XBOX LIVE on the console – with the Call of Duty franchise a particularly stellar example, I think it’s incredibly premature to dismiss the value of bringing that network and everything it can offer to Windows gamers."

I didn't really hear any of the COD4 cross-platform rumors, but it would be cool to see more games become cross-platform like Shadowrun, and I think COD4 would be a great game to see on Games for Windows - Live.

Problem is with Game for Windows is that these developers already have things in place like Steam. While I would love to play PC people and think that is the best next step in gaming, I don't think they are going to drop their current systems for a new one. And an unproven one to boot... yet. Top it off with MS probably gouging some of the profits, forcing add on content for a price, lack of an ability to make maps/mods, and then add in the cost of a Gold membership it doesn't look very appealing to a PC person.

I thought they just didn't see the Live Anywhere as fitting in their game style. Said it works better for RPGs or Puzzle Games, it just doesn't work for their style of FPS.

I myself was so disappointed with CoD 3 that I could care less until I see some reviews of this one.

How can it not fit their style? They release COD4 for the PC. They release it for the 360. They are both online. I see no reason why they don't offer the option of Live Anywhere. By no means are PC gamers required to use Live Anywhere.

I'm a complete Live Anywhere noob, but is there an option for xbox360 gamers to NOT play together with pc gamers?

It's pretty obvious that an xbox 360 gamer has a big disadvantage compared to a pc player... I think Live Anywhere is just unfair for FPS and RTS games...

Yeah, I'd like to see a modern combat game having cross platform play. It would just harken back to the good old days of Counter Strike playing, hopefully in my country if this pushes.

I saw this late yesterday and even commented on it for our next show. Despite what Kevin is saying if this is true then it would be a big blow to the Live anywhere intiative.

MS has to get a big 3rd party partner on board and I think if we do not hear anything at E3 or the latest X07 then Games for Windows Live will be off to a very rough start

The comment was specifically about how FPS and RTS doesn't work for cross-platform - only tetris or poker.

World in Conflict is an RTS, and Shadowrun (already out) is an FPS. Not sure why Activision thinks that FPS won't work cross-platform - shadowrun did an awesome job of balance.

maybe Activision/Infinity Ward doesnt want to take the time to properly balance between the PC and 360?

Is it cost effective for Infinity Ward to do cross platform gaming?

I think it's a bit ridiculous that Microsoft wants PC gamers to play with 360 gamers. Controller users are at a huge disadvantage against mouse and keyboard users. I hope this idea slows a fast death.

Chris: Not sure why you mentioned World in Conflict in your comment in the same breath as Shadowrun. It's (currently) a PC only title that uses (seemingly) an in-house developed matchmaking solution, even though Martin Walfisz says that cross-platform play could be exciting for the right game.

Perhaps you were thinking of another upcoming cross-platform RTS title using GfWL?

I do hope though, that gamers will stop the tired old controller debate, before they've even had first hand experience in it.

@Joost Good point - to clarify - I'm not sure that World in Conflict will be cross-platform, but I know that WiC is coming for the 360 - in addition to Battle for Middle Earth and Command and Conqueor.

I was just pointing out that making a blanket statement like Activision did isn't always true. ;)

It would be fair to point out that the devs for CoD3 were not infinity Ward. So, if you're a purist this would be the "real" CoD3.

I've been playing Shadowrun on Vista now for a couple of nights and I'm getting my butt handed to me by console players. It's fun - I like being able to play against friends on their 360s - everything works pretty smoothly. The running 'people I've met' list is cool and voice chat works well. However I do agree with an earlier poster that the apparent inability to mod and create content will turn many gamers away. And the achievement system, while seemingly a boon to the replayability of the game often encourages players to simply go after one goal ignoring teamwork and teammates.
