Microsoft Unveils Xbox 360 Elite

Moments ago, we released information on the new Xbox 360 Elite. Here are some details pulled from the press release we just sent.

The Xbox 360 Elite and its accessories are expected to begin arriving in U.S. stores on April 29, with an estimated retail price of $479.99 (U.S.).

Xbox 360 Elite contains:

120GB hard drive (black)
HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) port
Wireless controller (black)
Xbox LIVE headset (black)
HDMI cable
Component/SD cable
One month subscription to Xbox Live Gold

The following accessories for the Xbox 360 Elite console will be sold separately:

Xbox 360 Wireless Controller (black). Sold separately for $49.99 (U.S.).
Xbox 360 Play & Charge kit. Sold separately for $19.99 (U.S.).
Xbox 360 rechargeable battery (black). Sold separately for $11.99 (U.S.).
Xbox 360 120GB hard drive. The hard drive is sold separately (standard gray) for $179.99 (U.S.).

Question though, with the 'transfer cable'. Is this a stand alone way to transfer data, or will you need a PC to do that?

it would be nice if there was some sort of buy back feature thus not screwing over us early adopters. I guess my buy back will have to be done over ebay or gamecrazy. Now my other issue is that my downloadable content will only work if my xbox 360 if it is online. No workaround on that one

As we get closer to launch, the exact method for transferring data from one hard drive to the other will be finalized. There will be a way to easily migrate the data using only the Xbox 360.

As an early adopter of Xbox 360 I feel annoyed that Microsoft have chosen to do this.

I was hoping for a release of an HDMI cable for my current Xbox 360 not another separate console for which I will have to now sell my current Xbox 360 and repurchase a more expensive console with little additional features. The expanded hard drive is welcome but for UK users is of little use due to there being virtually no HD content available for purchase.

For a games console that puts it's 'HD-ready' credentials on it's sleeve from the launch-date an HDMI connection should not be considered an 'elite' item but one which Microsoft should have provided in the first place.

If that is not technically possible then Microsoft should offer some form of rebate to customers to make up for it.

i've never understood the drama from 'early adopters'. did you not purchase the Xbox 360 and get everything from that purchase? i didn't know there were any deals out there that said 'buy now, exchange later'.

is there ever a deal such as that for any type of product bought?

and really since when and why have people begun to think that HDMI is the only method from which to get High Definition? High Definition has been going on for years via component. What has changed?

is the Xbox 360 not HD ready? i think so...in fact i KNOW so because i'm enjoying my Xbox 360 in HD right now and i don't have an HDMI television. HDMI is a luxury not a necessity for HD gaming.

the interweb creates ridiculous theories. hey at least Microsoft gives you the friggin' cables lol

and there is no issue with downloadable content transferring properly. the Elite isn't even out yet how could anyone know if there are issues with that?

My ONLY question/concern is, will there be any possibility in the future for games to come out which will ONLY be playable on Elite systems. I think that's not likely, but stranger things have happened - at one point it was mentioned that smaller 65 nanometer processors would be used, instead of the current 90 nm chip, resulting in better and cooler performance.

That only has an effect on the heat and speed of data processing, but the big question is, are there any OTHER unpublicized technical differences that could result in future games being "Elite-exclusive" titles?

Well, I feel screwed. I purchased my 360, and the HD Drive over the holidays. I then purchased a new 1080p television, and found that I couldn't run the system in 1080p because it's only supported through the HDMI port.

So, I go digging around, and there's a statement from M$ around January stating that if there's enough interest they'll offer HDMI. Then there's photos of the new Elite version posted, and M$ says no, there's no plans for a new system to be released.

And here we are. If I had known this was going to happen, I would have held off on my purchase. The fact that they were so secretive, so that they could get the holiday sales pisses me off to no end. I'd like to see some kind of a buy-back program. My ass is hurting after this experience. F@ck You M$!!

ok, I guess maybe your a rich guy or since your a mvp MS gives you crap for free it isn't an issue for you. But the rest of us have budgets, and it blows major balls for ms to do this.

First they are adding hdmi support, this should have been there from the get go, this is a huge issue. Have you every watched something on component cables then turned around an hooked up the hdmi cables as watched it again? There is a difference.

Now there is another issue with purchased material, I'm extremely surprised that this isn't catching more wind.

When you buy something off the marketplace you license it for two things, you buy it for the xbox 360 it was originally purchased on and you buy it for the gamertag it was purchased with. Now if you get another xbox for whatever reason, (maybe it broke on you or you upgraded) your games or purchased content will ONLY work on the gamertag that purchased it.

Now you might wanna know how I know this, my 360 broke, and with all my purchased games if I am not logged it, I now get the demo versions. So if Xbox live is down, or if my internet is down I no longer get the enjoy the games that I bought. If you don't believe me you can ask anyone else that has had this issue.

So maybe now you can see my problem with this. As an early adopter I've been screwed over already by buying a busted xbox 360(most launch version ones broke), so I'm not to happy when again I'm getting the shaft again by being a early adopter, now I'm not getting that 120gb hard drive (which is ok i guess, I enjoy having to delete stuff of my drive every week) and I'm not getting the hdmi.

Only a smaller percent of users actually use HDTVs and even a smaller percent of that actually use HDMI. It seems that some got caught up in the whole "HDMI IS AWSOEME!!!111" Sony was spinning. This addition is solely for Microsoft to say "Oh yeah guys? We've got HDMI now".

And yes, my HDTV does support HDMI so it could affect me if I allowed it to.

The content problem isn't Elite specific and therefore is completely irrelevant to this discussion. It sounds more like just a chip on your shoulder that has grown larger due to this perceived "slighting"

Forgive me, yet I am still unclear about one issue. I have an HDTV that supports HDMI, yet I am runing my XBOX 360 HD-DVD player over component cables. For the most part I think the HD-DVD picture quality is excellent. However I still am not clear as to how much better the quality of the video would be via using HDMI over component (I do not have any special audio system, thus audio is not an issue to me)? Some say the HD-DVD video quality is noticeably different with HDMI versus component cables, and some do not think so. How is one to know? How is one to test the difference(s) in order to decided for themselves if the HDMI issue would be important enough so as to go through the issue of doing away with their current XBOX for an elite version?

Any help, advice, etc. would be appreciated.

As a 360 owner, the biggest disappointment = 120GB HDD for $179....

HDMI = Meh... I only see it as relevant if your TV will only take a 1080p signal via HDMI or you have a need to neatly organize your cables.

There haven't been any details released about migrating content from the 20gb to the 120gb drives, so I would hold off on any freak-outs.

We have a solution plan - we're just working out the details.

I also personally waited in line for 14+ hrs. for my launch-day 360, and I've gotten more than my use out of it. I'm ok with the SKU because the features on it aren't anything I'm in dire need of.

If I am going to buy a 2nd xbox, however, I would probably get an Elite.

Offering a new package is not a bad deal, it extends the life of the console (think PS2), brings in more dollars for Microsoft, and more Unique users online for us to tear apart in GoW. I do not have a problem with any of that.

My only question is in regards to the whole 1st console DLC issue. I am on console #2, and can only play D/L content when signed into Live. So far there is only one workaround to the problem , which is to re-download all of the content on a different XBL account set up by Microsoft. My question is, if there is going to be a "painless" transfer option for those who buy a 120GB HDD, can the rest of us who have only the 20GB have a "painless" way to get our content on our new consoles?

I have a suggestion, which will allow Microsoft to keep its DRM intact, and keep Microsoft from getting thousands of calls from folks in the same situation as all of us who are on our 2nd (and 3rd and 4rth) console. Set an attribute on all DLC that once it has stayed on the same console for 30+ days, meaning the HDD has not been moved around, that it can be re-locked to the new console. My HDD has not been unplugged from my refurb 360 since I got it.

Setting a time limit like this would only allow the content on whatever console it was plugged into at that point (and for 30 days prior). Then, if our current console happened to break again, we would only need to plug our old HDD into our new refurb for thirty days before we could get our content back again.

Thirty days seems like a long time, but it is a lot less than forever.

Please consider this guys!

Other than the issue of punishing early adopters, I think the larger issue is Microsoft's monopoly over the XBox 360 harwarde and accessories.

1) They chose the absolute smallest hard drive size they could get away with for the orginal XBox 360 Premium system and they made the hard drive a propietry type. This was obviously chosen so consumers would be compelled to upgrade to a larger hard drive which you can only buy from Microsoft. You can't stick a standard 2.5 inch hard drive in there like you can on a PlayStation 3.

2) Instead of going with standard memory cards like Nintendo and SOny did, Microsoft selected a proprietary memory card format that dollar-per-megabyte is way more expensive than an SD memory card and you can only buy one from Microsoft.

3) The Wi-Fi adapter is sold seperately on the XBox 360 so you have to shell out more cash to upgrade while Nintendo and Sony include this on PS3 ($600 model), Wii, PSP, and DS ( although you don't necessarily have to buy the Microsoft one but many people don't realize this ).

4) XBox 360 accessories like game controllers, cables, etc. require licsensing from Microsoft unlike other consoles which greatly limits options for consumers.

And don't forget that Microsoft forces you to pay a subsription to play online games - something that you get for free on every other contemporary gaming system. And there's 3rd party advertsisements on you XBox 360 dashboard for movies, game content, music, and TV. New ways to get your money are continuously being introduced on XBox Live Marketplace content. But you are still forced to pay to play online continuously.

I am not upgrading to the Elite, or the larger hard drive, or any more games, accessories, or downloadable content for the XBox 360. I've had it. No more. I'm tired of being ripped off.

Do I qualify as an early adopter? Rich and me in the same sentence has to be against some law in some state because I'm far from it. lol

I do know this. I expected HD gaming when I purchased my Xbox 360 and what do ya know...I got it. Does yours not?

My HDTV supports both component and DVI and yes I've played/tested HDMI against the two. There is more clarity but like I said it is not a necessity for HD gaming...it's a luxury for lack of a better word.

And I know a little something about the download issues currently. Like I said above, how does anyone know if those same issues that current 360 owners have experienced will apply to the Xbox 360 Elite?

No details have been announced...the Elite isn't even out yet so how do you know you'll experience some sort of profile restrictions when migrating your information to the Elite?

This ofcourse is just my opinion and my little change. I'm not saying you're wrong for what you feel...I'm saying I don't have those same feelings that's all.

MS had a chance to strike another blow to Sony with the Elite version and then they priced it wrong.

Posters are already mentioning how for $480 they might as well get a PS3 which includes built in Wi-Fi and Blue-ray for only $20 more.

I know not everyone needs these extras but when Joe-Schmoe goes to buy a console someone is definitly going to point this out and there goes a potential 360 sale.

Also, what's with the HDD pricing? I know the 20GB went for $100 so a 120GB for $180 sounds like a good deal, that is if you don't know what HDDs go for.

Is this greed going to help Sony get back in the race?

Well, the party is pumping up in this joint. I see tension all over.

I don't see what all the fuss is all about. No body is getting screwed, because we have a choice, whether to buy it or not. Yes it kind of sucks that, for now, I will have to stick with the 20 gig hard drive. But, at the moment, I don't need more then that, so it's cool, I'll wait.

We don't know how data will be transfered. I'm sure this has been talked about, and a solution is out there.

HDMI is not such a huge jump in visual quality. Unless you are a videophile, you can't see any major differences. The only reason I would like the HDMI connection is to make my wiring look more organized, since audio and video is passed through that one cable.

To finish my blabber, I will say. The Elite is just another SKU. Not a whole new system. We shouldn't feel cheated by MS for bring out a few features. All 3 Sku's will play the same games, and get me on Xbox Live. That is all I really care about.

I just want to comment on something that been posted here about us getting "free stuff". Being an MVP does not mean for us just to get free gifts from Microsoft. This haven't changed me at all I'm still the same. I've been working so hard with our podcast and now other companies are willing to send us games for review. This has nothing to do with the MVP program and want this to be clear...

Every Xbox MVP are unique some are podcasters, forums members, bloggers, etc.. when we got nominated I never heard of the program until Zero Hour (Xbox 360 Launch). I wasnt trying to become one at all... because it just happened.. you will never see me posting "I should become an MVP" because that's not my style.

I took my time to do some research and got to see how wonderful it is to see Microsoft giving an award to other community members for their work from the past year. No other company will do this because they will only think about getting the money and doesnt even take feedback from their consumer. If I ever do get get games first thing we do at GTR is give it to our fans.. to those gamers that been supporting us since day one. Community is about helping other people not bashing or posting some slick comments on other sites.

Recently EA sent me 10 NBA Street Homecourt games to giveaway and I gave it to other podcasters so they can give it to their listeners because I want to help out instead keeping this to myself. Are they MVPs? No, they are not but they are doing something that will make the community better. In other words help someone in the community that deserves a little “pat on the back”.

come guys let cooler heads prevail here. The Elite sku is what it is no one will twist your arm to get it. I voiced my opinion about it earlier today and I can see myself getting it one day when the price is right for me. If you dont have a 360 already or want a 2nd 360 this is a good value.

before this gets off topic and out of hand lets drop the talk about MVP's and go back to doing what we all do best and that is support the community with our various blogs and podcasts.

Well since the HDMI cable shown plugs into the standard AV port on the back of the 360, I see no reason why plugging said cable into a "normal" 360 wouldn't work. Even if MS themselves do not release the HDMI cable separately, third-party accessory manufacturers likely will.

Um, it doesn't plug into the same port, it uses the hdmi port.

If Sony still offers the $500 ps3 then it's not a good value. I still have to see if they officially stopped producing this SKU though.

I wouldn't be asking for a buy-back option, or say that I was screwed if I could get some kind of an HDMI output on my current 360. One of my biggest problems is when the rumor went out about the Elite (Codenamed Zephyr at the time, and M$ denied it) one of the M$ reps denying the rumor stated that if they felt there was enough demand for HDMI they would provide it, and that the 360 is modular and flexible, insinuating that existing 360's would be able to support HDMI.

Then just under 3 months after denying "Zephyr's" existence, they drop this on us, and basically give anyone who had already purchased a 360 the finger.

I'd like to know why they didn't come right out and say that the existing 360's can't ever support HDMI? Why insinuate that it can? Well, I guess I know the answer really; so they don't run off any possible customers. Why tell them the truth when we can fleece 'em and fuck 'em?

I cant wait for this to come out, I wont get one right off because Im happy with the HD signal off it right now but I cant wait to upgrade this little 20gig hard drive and pick me up a black controller. Ill definately get this model when I decide to get another system.

Well from what I'm seeing on the picture the HDMI port is located on a tiny box which in turn is plugged into the same A/V port as found on current 360s. Could be wrong, but that's how it looks.

Well, at least we got the whole "MVP" thing sorted out.

I still think though that you (Mxsft) should have waited a little longer and released the Elite with the 65nm processor.

The thing that makes me most not want to do business with Sony is that they lie out their asses every chance they get. With the openness of MS and the community, I thought that the BIG lies wouldn't come from MS. I don't like being lied to and then expected to just pretend it didn't happen.

I don't mind the 'elite' so much and I'm happy to have a bigger HDD option, even though it's WAY over priced. What I really hate is being told that the standard A/V port could put out digital video signal. I assume that can't be true since the elite has a separate HDMI port and there has never been an HDMI or DVI cable for the standard A/V port. What am I missing here? Will these cables be coming next, after some people rush out to get the only perceivable HDMI option?

IMO the 'elite' should have replaced the 20GB version at $399 and the 20GB version should have replaced the 'tard pack' with/out a HDD at $299. The system seems due for a price drop and it would have kept things more even with the competition. I'm sure this doesn't make business sense, but I still think it's what should have happened.

Yes! Finally Xbox will weed out the retard fans who do nothing but complain. These are the people who annoy me on XBL. Now I can have that a XBL community full of dedicated fans and not ones who are quick to jump ship and bitch.

I have never seen such a bunch of babies about new hardware..or is it that you are so in love with the 360 that this just breaks your hearts not to have the latest and greatest version.

nevermind...i keep forgetting ps3 and nintendo have the most people on their payroll to post hate threads.
