No Xbox Live Arcade Title This Week

We learned today that there won’t be an Xbox Live Arcade game released this Wednesday. We know there are a few titles that we’re all really looking forward to, but game development remains as much an art as a science. I know that everyone’s working hard to bring out the titles we’ve announced as soon as we can.

We wanted to break the news to you gently, so we thought that we’d do something a little different for your information ridicule.

Hopefully our weak attempt at humor doesn’t detract from how seriously the product team is taking both the release schedule and the quality bar. In the meantime, we’ll see if we can find out more.

Man, I'm a huge fan of the XBLA, but you guys are horribly dropping the ball, here. With the quality -- or lack thereof -- of many of the retro releases, it's just strange that at least some sort of game (retro, casual, whatever) can't make it out each week. It has been over a year since the system launched and it's getting kind of annoying that this XBLA portfolio can't seem to get on track.

wtf. I'm at a loss of words. I had high hopes for XBLA, keep thinking MS will make a last attempt to save it, some great comeback, but alas I give up... Its done for. Rest in peace Live Arcade, we had some good times together.

I know this might sound like a dumb idea, but form now on it might be a good idea to like wait until a game is finished (passed cert) before announcing that its going to be released. And then give it a date, a solid date. That way no-one can complain when there isnt any game because we will have know for weeks in advance of whats coming and when

I can totally understand that. Even you have a ton of titles under developing, its still hard to get it out every week. You know unexpected bugs come out, failed QA test. That kind of stuff. For me, this's better than "Release first, Pacth later".

Are you guys serious? This video is awesome. If anyone of you had the pleasure of meeting Tony, Chris and John. You know these guys are very supportive of the Xbox Live community. This video has a hidden message behind it(at least my crazy mind thinks so).

In my opinion, they are poking fun at themselves. They know what you guys want. Someone screwed up with a release date, it happens. They want to shed some light on the situation and let you guys know that they made a mistake. No way is this an FU to anyone.

Worms, Alien Humanoid are one of my most highly anticipated arcade titles. I am a paying costumer just like the rest of you, so I share your disappointment's. But to say that these guys are screwing us and laughing about it...Man that is insane.

XBLA is mostly CRAP anyways. I'm sick of junk games like paperboy costing 400 points and most games costing 800 points. so sad. mortal kombat 3 is the best on there and its atleast worth it. Seriously just release GOOD GAMES instead of these cheap filth like paperboy and root beer tapper for crying out loud. THESE GAMES SUCK! WE DONT WANT THEM! Get with the program guys.

Wow I'm pretty shocked 2. I think you picked a bad week to skip a release. Surely you can just throw something out there. I'm feel even more sorry for the developers of these titles they are getting their titles pushed back and back. It's really going to kill new titles being developed if you don't start doing something about it. Personally I think we need 2 titles per week. 1 original and 1 classic would be a good idea.

I had a really bad feeling this was gonna happen :(

2 retro games and then nothing...damn XBLA is just constant dissapointment after dissapointment ever since it came out in all honesty. All these great games planned, yet do we ever see any of them come out when they were supposed too?

Alien Hominid was originally planned for the end of last year, surely it doesn't take this long to get it ready?

Still, at least Crackdown's out this week...

I think what everyone learns from this is never EVER get excited for games that you think might be released on Arcade, you'll most likely end up dissapointed. God knows I have and won't get my hopes up for anything in the future, so if something does get a release then it's just a nice bonus.

You (XBLA team, whoever) don't have ANY games at all that could be released this week? I wish someone would confirm that, because right now I'm inclined to believe the rumors that you're just sitting on a pile of finished games, for whatever reason. I wish publishers could just decide when to release their stuff instead of Microsoft. There must at least be some completed bull**** 1980s games that were never popular to begin with and no one cares about that you could be releasing now, because it cannot possibly be difficult to get one of them done for every week of the year. I mean, MULTIPLE retail disc games like Lost Planet come out per week, and those are way more complicated than anything on Live Arcade. It makes no sense. Also, nine months ago at E3, Peter Moore announced that artists like Madonna would feature in Lumines Live, and Sonic would be coming to the service too. Lumines Live still has no proper music videos, Madonna or otherwise, and I still don't have a clue when Sonic is coming. Are Sega really slow or is this Microsoft holding it back?

Okay, so just to recap, the last 4 weeks have been:

1) A press release about all the great games due out

2) Root beer tapper, the least interesting game on said list.

3) Paperboy, 2nd least interesting game on the list

4) Scheduled maintenance, followed by nothing.

Phenomenal job! Seriously, it's not even worth listing all the things your competitors - who have come out of the gate much later than the Xbox 360 - have added to *their* online marketplaces in those 4 weeks. Suffice to say, it wasn't "nothing" or "a press release", that's for sure.

Don't get me wrong though, I think its *great* that you guys have time to make videos taking the piss out of how much your company sucks at delivering on promises and content, I just think it'd be perhaps a tad more productive if you could focus on, y'know, the games?

Perhaps that's funny internally, but wasn't funny for the paying customers.

XBLA Wednesdays is sink fast as a marketing angle. Where's the content, folks. What happened to the huge backlog of games alluded to last year, when it was said that there may have to be twice a week releases?

Catch up. Consider releasing twice a week for a month or two. Inundate us with fun content and you'll be forgiven for starving us the last two months - and throwing ported games from the regular xbox's midway classics disc doesn't count as providing content.

Look--you all need to have a 'come to Jesus' meeting over there at Microsoft, because the great ship XBLA is starting to spring some leaks.

Your video and movie marketplace would be great...but we don't have a hard drive big enough to fully take advantage of it. Your XBox Live Wednesdays are starting to become a joke with the lack of a release schedule, infrequent updates, and weaksauce retro titles being thrown out recently.

Folks--if you're going to do retro titles, you should be at least launching them in pairs, if not more. I mean, if Nintendo can do it with their virtual console releases, why not Microsoft? Also, why aren't we seeing things like TG-16 and Genesis titles on the XBLA service as well? That, or more PlayStation and Saturn titles (including Saturn titles toward the end of its lifespan or that had network play built in...like Sega Rally or Bomberman?)

There's a lot that can be done by your groups up there--for a while, XBLA was coasting along because it was the only game in town. Now it's not, and it's quickly being overshadowed by the competition. :-|

@ Ballistic: if you think these posts are the worst "crybaby" posts you've ever seen, I would like to welcome you to the internet.

Purchasing Crackdown (or any other game) doesn't address the issue with XBLA content. It's like dropping a hammer on your foot to distract you from your migraine.

Many games have been announced for XBLA, including screenshots or Achievement lists. Sure, teasing new titles is common in the industry - but teasing something that's (2)50mb or less? And then being unable to deliver it within three or four months of the reveal? C'mon, that's weak sauce. Double Dragon, Catan, Worms, et al have been revealed, and should at least have identified release windows.

Additionally, it was stated last year that there was a backlog of content waiting for certification. If it's the certification process that is slowing things down - get more folks to assist in that process. It's gotta be clearly documented by now, so there are SMEs who can train others to help deal with the MS part of the backlog and help the developers get through it.

To be honest, I don't think it's entirely Microsoft's fault - although they shouldn't of announced that there would be a game/content out every week because the way development of videogames and content works, it's risky. Development schedules can be affected by delays and other certification processes. I think the retro titles have just as much right as the homegrown stuff to be on Live Arcade to give more of a scope and a choice to the consumer.

At least there's less pi**ing and moaning (or more constructive criticism) here than on Major Nelson's blog...

People, people, what a bunch a whining wussies! Surely, you cannot have all achievements for every title you own. I look at this as a chance to pop in an old title and get those pesky achievements that have alluded this 21560 point player. Their is a reason things are delayed. There have been weeks in the past where there was no XBLA game released, and not this outpouring of nipple needing. Feelz Good & Ballistic get it and Devster speak for yourself. And as for "Q" there are 2 types of people in the world, those who run $hit and those who eat $hit. I guess I know which one you are. :-p

The guys in this video are expression their frustration, and perhaps the buyers frustration, through humor. If you get this upset over a 50MB arcade game, heaven help you when you experience a real frickin' crisis.

About six months ago, I had a conversation with a friend within MS, and we got to talking about the way Arcade was being handled. He told me that we (GamerAndy Live!) bagged on Arcade too much, and I said that when they started putting out games I didn't feel they should be embarrassed about charging real money for (Lame, overdone retro titles) that we'd say nice things about it. He then told me that he agreed and there were alot of people within that division who were trying to push the original content out, but it was being stopped because some of the higher-ups had gotten it in their heads that you could produce retro titles very cheaply, and make money off the nostalgic gamers - Pretty much all profit.

The problem is we need release dates. Everyone is waiting for a couple big titles that can come out any week now. A lot of people are very excited and then when they hear that nothing is coming out they are piss. I understand and hope that you take the extra week to make the content better.

XBLA has been seriously lacking in quality recently and could do with releases such as Worms, Jetpac and Castlevania asap. They are already available over partnernet so what is the hold up?

Some more backwards compatibility wouldn’t go amiss either – half of the list of working games do not run correctly (frame rate, missed files etc) and it’s particularly annoying when PS3 and Wii offer almost full backwards compatibility out of the box.

Come on Microsoft, not all of us purchased a 360 just for Halo 3 you know…..

I wish the Community guys(Porcaro/Paladino/Hynes) were kept more in the loop as to XBLA releases. What I think we all are looking for, correct me if I'm wrong, is an announce list, similar to the one last summer where there was Pac-Man and a date, Cloning Clyde and a date, Frogger and a date. The games were layed out for an entire month. If their was a monthly XBLA announce list, the community would be most appreciative. Porcaro/Paladino/Hynes, is an announce list at all a possibilty or better yet a realistic possibilty?

If anything, the anger behind the comments shows how excited people are for some of the upcoming XBLA releases (I'm stoked for Castlevania and Wormz as much as anyone).

If anything, the XBLA team has a chance to win some major brownie points by reaching out the community next week. (Like releasing 2 games, releasing a top quality game at a temporary discount)

Look at the bright side, though, for all of us that have been using XBLA, we've got high expectations after seeing what the system can do.
You can't say that for Nintendo or Sony. Nintendo releases a few expensive VC games every week (side note, why to people whine about paying $5 for a revamped root beer tapper and then go out and spend $5 on Urban Champion?). And you can't even play most of Sony's releases on a PS3, you need a PSP to play such gems as Destruction Derby.

For those of us using XBLA, we're really not that bad off...

I agree with the "crybaby" and "wussies" comments above. If all you guys can complain about is the lack of a release, then Microsoft is doing something right. Of course they aren't going to be able to pump 2-4 titles out like the VC ... Nintendo has decades of titles they're simply porting over as is with no special enhancements -- unlike Microsoft who at leasts tries to make a game better with Live multiplayer, enhanced graphics and gameplay. Then again there is Sony you could go be happy with and their ... what? One download and crappy free service. Go download a brilliant hi-def movie or television show. Go watch the music video artist of the month. Go replay a classic or original title already released on arcade. Go download and play a cool demo. The options Xbox offers should be more than enough to cover the lack of an arcade title release.

@ cbennett - I always do speak for myself. :-)

I agree with your statement that we're really looking for a return of the release calendar. The calendar would allow people to look forward to a given wednesday, instead of looking forward to EVERY wednesday.

Currently we have the anticipation of all those good games waiting in the wings and then suffer from the letdown of a 20 year old port or no game at all. It's worse when the port was already ported once for the old xbox, though the disc isn't on the backwards compatibility list...

Achievements are great and all, but it's also about the content and the philosophy. I'll pony up the points if you give me good content. Old Game does not automatically = Retro. If the game isn't fondly remembered, old game just equals old game, nothing more.

I like XBLA and I support the folks working on it. I just wish they'd provide better status/schedule updates - or get the developers doing that.

While I do think that this video is absolutely funny. And it does deliver the message with a little humor and almost softens the blow.

The XBLA team is really not making friends here. It's been over a year, and you'd think that in that time they would have had enough developers see the potential for cash in XBLA to be able to at least have 2 titles ready to release on a weekly basis. One original and one retro every week. That would be awesome.

Now, I know that lots of people are comparing Nintendo's VC. But it's not the same ballpark. the big 'N' is releasing ROMS for an already finished emulator. Microsoft's titles, even the retro ones are reprogramed, with updated graphics and online play. There is a difference trust me.

It sounds more like Microsoft needs to step up the pace on there approval staff, and or get a little more hands in the developer support for XBLA (although MS does a better job at supporting developers than any other gaming console team out there). Get these games aproved and released.

Yeah thanks a lot. I was really optimistic for the arcade way back when the system launched, but not anymore. Too many awful releases and weeks where we just get a crappy UNO pack. I'm officially done with XBLA.

Wow, this is getting sad. First three weeks off for christmas, then paperboy and root beer tapper, and now nothing. The last orignal title we got was nearly two months ago. Way to go XBL arcade team, way to go.

I mean after more than a year I'd think you guys would have made progress, especially with a larger team... I guess not.

Being smug or insensitive is not what we were intending to do with the video. It also wasn't trying to rub salt in any one's wounds. I want Worms, Castlevania and (my personal favorite) Settlers of Catan just as badly as everyone else wants them.

We have the unfortunate job of breaking the bad news that there would be no XBLA title this coming Wednesday. Rather than simply post "No title this week - sorry" and getting hate-mail and negative comments, we tried to poke some fun at ourselves and let the community know that we hear the complaints that folks are pissed about (retro titles, and weeks with no game releases), and we're frustrated too!

I'm ok with people thinking the video was dumb, or unfunny, but the humor was directed at ourselves, not at any of the folks waiting patiently for Live Arcade titles.

I wanted to jump in here and clarify. Hopefully it helped a little.

Microsoft finds it easier to talk about the games comin than actually release them. Who knows when sensible soccer will turn up, dec 2007 i predict.

So Wii owners get Donkey Kong Country this week, PS3 owners get Flow and 360 owners get a sophomoric video informing us all that we are once again getting the shaft.

When Live Arcade launched I was very willing to accept this sort of thing- the service was new and just starting to grow and I realize that it takes some time to get one's ducks in a row. But it's now 15 months later and I'm seeing no signs of improvement. The only difference is that you now have two major competitors breathing down your neck. Seriously take a look at the last 4 weeks of XBLA... one no-show, a root beer serving game, Paperboy, and yet another no-show.

This is not even close to the Arcade experience I've been promised. And this is coming from one of its biggest fans. Imagine how others feel about it. You're a billion dollar company and you can't get Worms out on time? C'mon now.

I think it's both harsh and simply untrue to make the assumption that the guys from the Xbox community team are taking a pop at gamers with this video. I'm sure it was purely intended to be a lighthearted effort at softening the blow of the news that the fanboys won't get their weekly XBLA title.
Also notice that a couple of comments suggest that some gamers are taking the arrogant a**hat attitude that they somehow DESERVE these games and that the Xbox Live Community team is doing you a dis-service by not delivering this content on time.
And to whoever said "SONY treats their customers way better than this!" come to Europe and then see if you still hold that opinion. It's unfortunate that the guys from the Gamerscore blog have to take the brunt of this, when it's not their fault at all. Don't shoot the messenger guys!

Again, I personally think the video is harmless, but at this point, people just want games (many of which were promised early last year and still haven't shown). The video isn't really all that funny and just serves no real purpose when people just want games that seem to be taking forever to arrive. If it was more for your own enjoyment, why post it here?

Really, the excuses are just wearing thin at this point. There's hardly been any level of communication on Live Arcade, and that's what makes it even more annoying -- lack of information and minimal promotion of titles. Obviously, the cert process is much too cumbersome and is preventing proper information on release dates, etc.

When the last 8 weeks have provided us with 3 weak retro titles, Heavy Weapon, and four no-shows, it doesn't reflect well on what XBLA is going for.

So 8 weeks now and the only new title was Heavy Weapon. You can only tease people with "coming soon" so many times before everyone is too ticked off to buy the products.

I understand releases get delayed, but when one game is delayed it is no big deal. When 4 games don't show up that is an issue.

The Arcade team really needs to reorganize and evaluate their certification process and improve communication with the consumer. There is no reason they can't have at least 4 games "in the hopper" and announced with firm release dates.

If they don't have enough personnel - hire and train more staff aggressively. MS has touted that Arcade is a cash cow for the gaming division so why do they continue to operate on the cheap and take their devoted customers for granted?

There should be at least one title released EVERY week and preferably one retro and one original title every week. There are titles like Chess that were announced over a year ago that we're still waiting for. At this point, they are only hurting themselves by having something like 30 titles announced without firm schedules. At the rate they've been releasing the last 3 months it will be over a year before just the announced titles get to us!
