Microsoft Extends Xbox 360 Warranty to One Year

We just sent a press release out announcing that we're extending the warranty on the Xbox 360 to one year from the date of purchase in the United States and Canada (most of the world already has a one-year warranty).

The news is gets better: it applies to both would-be purchasers and those who already have Xbox 360 and are still within their first year of ownership.

Moreover, the new warranty policy is retroactive, so if you already paid for an out-of-warranty Xbox 360 repair within one year of purchase, you will be eligible for reimbursement of you console repair charges.  Looks like refund checks will begin going out in the next 10 weeks.  Reimbursements will be automatically distributed, so you don't need to contact Microsoft.

From the press release:

“Customer satisfaction is a central focus and priority for the Xbox 360 system,” said Jeff Bell, corporate vice president of Global Marketing for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. “In addition to jaw-dropping features such as high-definition graphics, an amazing variety with a catalog of over 160 games, and social online and entertainment experiences on Xbox Live®, the Xbox 360 system now offers this extended warranty upgrade. It is truly the industry’s most compelling home entertainment offering.”

If you have questions, you can visit www.xbox.com/en-US/support/contact, where you can check your warranty status, find troubleshooting information for common issues and find Xbox support contact information

Will people who purchased the 2 year extended warranty have their coverage extended to a full 3 years from the console purchase date?

Like I said on my site, isn’t it nice when a company sees its fans demand something and gives it to them, without the need of a class action lawsuit?

It took Sony nearly six years to help out the customers they sold faulty hardware to, Microsoft has been doing it since launch, and now is doing it for non-launch consoles as well.

Thanks Microsoft, this is why I call you the savior of gaming.

Extending the warranty is definitely a cool move, of course mine was already extended since I got mine on launch day.  I think we're all really looking for the post about PDLC already being on the disc and being unlocked by purchasing content on marketplace though.  I'm not trying to bust your balls here, it's the Friday before a long holiday weekend, slack off and enjoy the long weekend (I know I will).  I'd just love see sometone at some point address this.

Fantastic news.  I haven't had a problem one w/ my 360, but I think this will go a long way toward making people feel better about the purchase of such complex hardware.

Props to Microsoft for stepping up to the plate.

I called Xbox support and my extended warranty doesn't start until my first year runs out. I got my console last Jan and got a 1 year extended warranty which now will expire in Jan 08.

I am genuinely impressed. Especially by the fact that this change is retroactive.

Personally, my 360 has worked flawlessly for 10 months now. I'm well-aware however, that many people have had problems.

Did this have anything to do with the gargantuan thread that was started on Major Nelson's blog when he posted about the headset issues? I had never seen so many genuinely upset consumers....

How does the extended waranty work if you purchased a PRP through the palced you purchased it with? i.e. Best Buy? I was forced to use my PRP because my system died and it wasnt covered through MS anymore, can I get refunded my PRP? Let me know, thanks.

I just got my email back from best buy that said sorry but you used your PRP and we are not refunding anything call MS maybe they will do something for you.  I dont see what Microsoft would do for me considering it is best buys replacment plan but that was the response.

Best Buy should be able to get reimbursed from MS? You would think that they would try to make their customers happy, but for the most part Best Buy customer service stinks! Yeah I dont see how MS would pay for a PRP form somewhere else, dumb Best Buy people. Thanks for the info, I am gonna try here also and see what they say, i'll let you know.
