More on the HD-DVD player from Major Nelson

In this week's podcast, Major Nelson hosts an interview with more information about the upcoming Xbox 360 HD-DVD player. One of the questions we've gotten is about what the dashboard interface will be. The team's come up with an interesting way of doing it, basically letting you use the up/down arrow key after selecting the drive interface. These aren't final, and are subject to change.

Also I really hope that Larry's idea of putting an audio CD / DVD in the HDDVD player and listen to it while playing a Xbox 360 game using the normal DVD9 drive comes to live..Did you guys already looked into that?

This looks pretty cool. Nice idea so we can be able to control both. Major it would be cool if you could do a show on just the Xbox Live vision camera and maybe even a show about the PS3 just so we can know how it is doing and what not. I am a big fan of the Xbox 360 and really want to know about the competition you guys will have this year. Thanks major. (I really want to send you a friend request so we can play each other. Cause no offesnse but i really think that I am better than you at Batlle For Midlle Earth 2. So we should have some fun sometime. Hope to see you soon Major.

Can you comment on how a user will get 24/96khz DolbyDigital Plus off an HD-DVD? As far as i know there is no way to get this at 24/96 resolution without HDMI.

How is the add-on going to provide this because based on the comments on Major's podcast, there dont seem to be any plans for HDMI...

They could add a blade dedicated to the dvd drives.

When you switch to the viewing blade you have the dvd/hddvd info along with info regarding whatever disc is in either player.

For instance, if you're watching Bambi, you could have the cover displayed in that blade with the year it was realease and a little summary... dunno... anything.

I can't create an image in photoshop to depict what I'm envisioning, but perhaps a more talented individula can.

The four new labels should read (in order):

Play DVD
Play HDDVD
Open DVD Tray
Open HDDVD Tray

'Disc'/'Disk' doesn't help anyone understand the function better and in the case of the last picture it would mean 'Open High Definition Digital Versatile Disc Disc Tray'. I assume the HDDVD logo will blend in properly and it'll generally look more polished in the final design.

To be honest if the appearance of those is anything to go by, a dramatically updated appearance for the dash isn't on the cards. To my eyes the 3D presentation of the original Xbox dash was superior to what we've got now on the 360. I think the dashboard should show some of the processing might of the hardware, not just how wonderful its online services are. Also some of the 2D graphics already look rough now at 720p, how on earth do they hold up to 1080i?

The Xbox dash managed to distance itself from the uneven appearance of windows but the 360 shares a few too many rough edges. We also cannot forget the low res, jerking Guide because whilst it provides useful functions no matter what we're doing, it also provides a nasty dose of ugly. I hope it's still possible to put these problems right, maybe not in the next update and maybe not even for the internal flash memory or even the current 360 spec. But if the 360 is going to last another 4 years I really want to be looking at attractive menus that slide smoothly and provide a pleasurable experience.

I think they must consider to put the hd-dvd in the xbox 360. why some hardware will be cheaper over time.
and a xbox 360 v.2 will not be a big case to make when the hardware price wil drope even i will considere to take a xbox v.2 version to take it up to the limit.

you can also make 3 pack of it a
standard pack, a pro pack, or a pro hd.
For a few bucks more.
For the ones that already got a xbox 360 you can buy the hd dvd seprate.

Microsoft then let the people know they are there for us.
To support all the options.

Sony, sorry to say. Can support hd-dvd when they want it with just a firmware upgrade or they just change there hardware specs.

i agree the dash of the 360 can be more with effects if possible and look smoother and more dynamic..

I just hope you can havea music cd in one tray and a game in the other, I dont want to waste my HDD space by filling it upp with music. Oh and it does look to much like a pokeball, It's going to give me nightmares......

Looking at the images, I am assuming the segment that is white is supposed to be what is selected. The arrow in the middle seems a little confusing cause it is pointing away from the selected tray! I think if they go with this design this should be reversed.

so as i figure it, you move the hilight down to the cd tray as usual but then hit it again to get the tray to switch over to the hdDVD tray icon... COOL an extra down button press, nothing majorly complicated.

I think there should be two seperate trays on the dashboard. One for DVD and one for HDDVD.
Its the easiest way to control which tray is in control.

The current idea isn't bad but a bit to complicated for most users.
They want:
go to the menu point , click on it -> result

but not:
where's the menu point for hddvd? , perhaps "open tray"? , oh which button must I press to open the hddvd drive? - lets try the shoulder buttons , wrong , ...

think about it and have a nice day

I have to agree with one of the posters above - where is the HDMI? This is really critical for audiophiles and those of us taking our living rooms to the next step in terms of minimising cabling while maximising video/audio quality?

And I second the vote to create an X360r2 which has the HDDVD installed - of course that has crossed Microsoft's mind - but now, to make it a reality - I'm sure they're playing a wait and see as to how sales fare through this rough holiday competition. If they come out on solid ground - a REV2 should be a given.

Any chance the UI will read the disc in the drive(s) and report back what's in the drive?

So for example, instead of 'Play HDDVD' when a disc is in the drive it could say 'Play Italian Job HDDVD'

Now that's there's the possibility of two drives, I think it would be a great addition.

Is it possible to have an option in settings to switch on "Timed Ejection" for advanced users.

Quick Press of Eject button - DVD tray opens
Held Press of Eject Button - HD-DVD tray opens.

I suspect over time you'll be playing more games than movies.

That's ok I guess, I just wish there would be a Open/Close tray available at all times, even when there is a game or a movie inside, you could still open it. It would eliminate the need to press the eject button whatsoever, because the eject button is kinda hard and pressing too hard it might move the xbox entirely. Until you find a way to a softer eject button, I'd hope there be an option to open/close it via the software at all times. A blade with "Acc. HD-DVD" would have been cool too.

Would be great if we could get an add-on HDD as well, maybe 1 TB+ and if we could rip the HD-DVD content onto our HDD as well (with content protection, of course). That way, no need to scamble for discs whenever you want to watch a film. A 1 TB HDD should store 40 films easily.

Any word on how the 360 can squeeze 1080p play out of the HD-DVD add-on? Any HDMI adapter to be released?

Jimminy christmas, if you guys can hear the difference between 5.1 24bit audio at 48khz and 5.1 24bit audio at 96khz, why the heck are you even considering using a game system as a player in the first place?

can we put game dvds into the hd-dvd drive? I ask this because the built in dvd drive is kind of noisy when playing a game... I hope for a more quiet spin experience :-)

my 1 question wasn't answered. sad thing was i just wanted to know if there was a technical limitation to adding HDMI. I don't need it & no one else really needs it for clarity & hi-def unless they decide to turn the broadcast flags on (encryption flags that down-rez the image) in the future or if 360 could output 1080p (which i don't think it's possible). analog component works but is it possible for 360 to output HDMI? This is very important if congress legislates digital output only for HD content.

Major, i'll give u credit for asking about HDMI, but points subtracted for not asking if it's technically possible. Will this question be answered ever?

thanks in advance for anyone that can ask this because i don't need HDMI now but anyone buying the player might need to know if it will be required later on. i don't want to buy a player that gets 'bricked' in a year or 2.

If there is no HDMI cable released when this comes out the I won't get it. Yes you will need an HDMI Cable in order to get the full res after they enable the protection. I beleive it will be down rez to 720p. So after some years the drive would be like having just a slighty upgraded dvd player. Which is not the reason you would buy the HD-DVD drive.

what about the true faithful xbox360 owners who pre ordered their consoles and have already got theirs now we will have to put our hands in our pockets again while none faithful xbox360 who buy theirs this christmas will get one for free not included in pack like xbox say the price will be the same as it was when it first came out but it will include an hd dvd drive, microsoft did this with the first xbox i got nothing even though my mates who bought the console after me got vouchers to buy hardware for the normal xbox when the price dropped in the matter of months and the same thing is happening again i cant believe microsoft have done it again im really annoyed the true owners should produce their recipts or console serial number and we should all get a hd dvd drive for free and the inconvience in which xbox has caused

HDCP will not be activated until at least 2012. Hell, it may never happen. By that time, we will have a new console.

Actually if the ICT flag is set on a disc the player is required to downres to 540p.

"HDCP will not be activated until at least 2012...."

The 2010 and 2012 dates thrown around casually are based on a "gentleman's agreement" among the studios. Basically the studios saying, "Trust us!" Fact is, the ICT flag was built into the HDCP spec for a reason. It's in there and it's functional, and all a players are required to comply. It's up to the studios where and when to use the ICT flag. It's not up to Microsoft. It's up to you the consumer to make your best guess when that will happen.
