Sony’s Launch Announcement: The Official Xbox Response

Since Sony made their PS3 announcement yesterday, lots of people are wondering what the official Xbox response is. Well here you go:

This announcement certainly doesn’t change any of our plans. We’ve blasted out of the gate with the greatest launch in the history of video games and we’re keeping our eyes squarely fixed on today and on the Xbox 360 road ahead, including continuous new content and programming through our premier Xbox Live online gaming service, the delivery of 80 high definition games and shipping between 4.5 and 5.5 million consoles by June.

This may come as a shock to folks, but Sony tends to not share their launch plans with us in advance. ;) We're continuing to stay focused on Xbox 360.

Definitely some marketing mumbo jumbo there, but I definitely think the Viva Pinata press conference was well done. It has deflected SOME, not all, of the gaming media away from the announcement. HOWEVER, the Official Halo 3 announcement would have went much better. A couple of renders and the number "3" in Halo font. Thats all I think it would have taken. No conferences, nothign. Just that on a press release.

Im hoping that Microsoft takes the time between now and the PS3 launch to perfect the backwards compatibility. Im pretty sure that would go a long way to convince parents and college students to buy a 360, as they will not have to free enough space for another console. It doesn't take a genius to realise that kids and students do not always have a lot of space for multiple consoles so if they can replace their old console (ala PS3 replacing PS2/PSone) with a new one then they are more likely to do so.
Not that I expect Sony to have perfect backwards compatibility either, in fact the sheer fact they claim 100% implies they must have a PS2 chip in there somewhere so once again that thing must be costing them a FORTUNE!
It surely is a good thing that the X-Box was based on a PC architecture, its something Microsoft should be able to emulate in their sleep as you cannot design an OS for an architecture you do not know intimately.

Of course I also hope for lots of breathtaking games releases too, but that is more dependent on third-party developers really.

Dear God, this is the funniest thing I've ever read. It was the greatest PR launch perhaps, but then it bombed out when you couldn't ship enough units, shifted blame to suppliers (when let's be honest - you have no idea how to handle hardware) and then had to handle the backlash of defective units.

Seriously - I buy every console when it ships, and yet, I still have not picked up a 360..oh wait..that's because I can't. You still can't ship enough. That's a great launch in my book. Greatest in history. Revisionist history

Personally I didn't buy a 360 to play xbox games. I bought it for newer 360 games. Sure there are some nice xbox games that i'd like to mess around with, but investing money into a 360 then being bent out of a shape because certain games aren't backwards compatible is not something I worry about.

Hell if I wanted to play xbox games I'd just buy an xbox, but microsoft is in a damn good position right now (makes the early launch seems like a very genius move) Although and i'm sure microsoft knows this a big showing at E3 (better than sony's showing will do wonders for the 360) At the end of e3 if people were most impressed by the 360 people can easily go out and buy themselves a 360 at some store, sony on the other hand wont have such a luxury with their ps3. So the 360 has to show off the big guns at E3 and prove to people that the ps3 isn't better than the 360.

I want sakaguchi to blow the roof off with blue dragon and lost odyssey and can't wait to see some crazy too human , gears of war, or return to castle wolfenstein footage. Eager to see mass effect and crackdown as well. Bioshock, shadowrun :)

I bet you haven't tried hard enough.

I went out and bought an Xbox 360 on launch day. Sure, there was a line. But if you really wanted the new Xbox all you had to do was go to a store 30 minutes before they opened.

I also had a preorder that would have been delivered within a month after the release.

It seems like there is no major shortage at the moment.

Just because you've got the console easily doesn't mean others was able to also.

AND, if there was a major outroar about the defect, and there actually WAS the surge of pictures that shows it, I think I would call that a reasonable proof.

You must've been busy playing your 360 while others were lining up at other stores or ebays and complaining about the defects.

I don't think it is wise to judge XBOX from its cover. Yes I agree that XBOX has so many flaws this time. Who knows that those flaws will be gone by the next 3 months? You have to admit one thing. Microsoft is financially stronger than Sony. So they will have a higher ability to bet into the market than Sony. Maybe it is time that Sony is back out a little bit and give other consoles a chance. I still think that Microsoft will have a chance.

I'd have to say people complane to much.... so what, a lot of people have had to wait (me included) i didn't get one until the end of January, i was annoyed, but what do you expect, do you really think that anyone can supply for three major areas within weeks of each other. Normaly, not mentioning any names (caugh, psp, caugh, caugh) us lot in the uk have to wait 6 months to a year before we see consoles that have been released in the states and japan.

Come on, there are more important things to be worring about than waiting a couple of months for something that will definatly arrive at some point. Me, i'm going to be a dad in a couple of weeks, finish college soon, have a full time job on top of all that. The 360, or any other console is there to releave some of that stress, have a bit of fun maybe, who needs extra bother like that.

For all of you that don't have one yet, be patient, good things come to those who wait.

I agree with Jack, I also managed to walk on off the street and pick up a premium off the shelf in Mid January. If you havn't gotten a 360 now, your just too lazy to look.

As for the defective units, isn't the percentage something like 3% and less than industry average. You may very well hear an outcry from those unfortunate few, but since when did people complain when the console worked 100% out of the box (Like Mine)

I really do hope that Halo 3 gets released to coinside with the PS3 launch, they did a PS2 price drop when the Xbox 1 was released, remember? But they should also MGS4 should be released at the same time on the 360, that would scupper them good style. But I think the Revolution release which is scheduled to be just prior to the PS3s is going to make a bigger dint in Sonys market share than any software title will do.

I just hope Microsoft don't get too complacent and take this next year to concentrate on getting quality software and hardware to the end user. Come Xmas 2006 its going to be a massive fight.

Sure there are defective units out there, but as has already been mentioned - they are the exception and not the rule. AFAIK the failure rate of 360s is below industry average.

People would do well to bear in mind the magnifying effect the Internet has.

microsoft has this war won hands down, well maybe not in japan, cause let's face it, nothing american does well in japan but our american dollars, go figure :/ the system is a powerhouse, that will have a killer lineup of game titles and tons of exclusive titles :) it's just as strong as the overrated gaystaytion3, but it's much easier to develope for, so take that fony sony. so all of you sony fanboys who are looking forward to a gaystation3 also look for a high price tag,and also to look into buying a new tv, cause bluray doesnt work on your regular tv's,also look forward to high priced games. and damn near every game that will be on the gaystation3 will be on the 360, and will be the same quality but better,because of the online support that microsoft has established :) so really, how will fony sony win this war? (quick breakdown: power between the two systems are damn near equal, so much so that you wont be able to tell the diff. in visuals or anything else for that matter, what can be done on one system can be done on the other/game titles welll of course, both systems will have their own exclusive titles but exclusives only make up about 20 of all systems library, which means that whatever fony sony gets the all powerful 360 will get aswell, but at a cheaper cost :)/company money? well we all know who wins that one, so there isnt any need to touch on that one/online suport? now hears another one that i dont have to touch on,cause you already know :\ /and last but not least let's compare the best out of 4 titles that most people are antipating for the two systems, fony sony first:metal gear,final fantasy,kill zone2,grand tourismo(pretty nice)xbox360:gears of war,ninja gaiden2,starwars knights of the old republic3,and THE ALL GREAT AND MOST POWERFUL,IN A LEAGUE OF IT'S OWN HALOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO3.

I agree with THEMADBARBER. Sony is gambling at this time. And sony is gambling with a big big bet and a high risk. I'm sure that Sony will be the one in the loosing position this time. Maybe Sony will win market in Japan. But the success of the console will not likely the same as Playstation 1 and 2. Especially when Sony begins to put focus on a copy protection system that most likely too complicated. Maybe Sony can overcome piracy. But hei..... take a look again. Same quality but difficult in copy protection system? Developers will surely think again about this. Remember about Star Force's problem? Remember the cause that occur because of the "quality" of the starforce? I believe that Sony has to think over again during this war.

Just wanted to comment on the "nothing American does well in Japan"..you might want to check iPod sales, they are doing fantastically well over there.

And the reply saying people are "lazy" if they can't find a console - since when should consumers be expected to hunt around for a product? If production numbers were properly allocated (seriously, they could've halved Japan's allocation and done just fine), people wouldn't have to hunt. When I want a new home theater, TV or other consumer product - I don't have to go from store to store to find it. And even if there are products you have to hunt for, it's because they were insanely popular, not rushed out the door to be first to market. Now, if Microsoft considers the 360 a luxury good, then I can see the shortage as acceptable, but as a general consumer product - not so much.

3% defective - Any percentages can be massaged to read how you like them. For example, how do we know that that number isn't 3% of units "just couldn't be fixed" and had to be replaced? Or 3% of units had "this one issue which we consider defective, the rest we consider shipping issues." There are all sorts of ways for PR to spin #'s. And when MGS ships six million units - 3% is going to look like a lot bigger #. 3% of 500,000 units is 15,000 bad units, 3% of six million is 180,000. And for those who claim that number is about average for consumer goods - you're just quoting the PR that Microsoft put out in response to the whole problem. I'd like to know where that number comes from, because I've never heard an industry analyst for home entertainment ever quote that number. It seems like something they pulled out of thin air. I'm not saying they are liars by any stretch - but everyone is quoting Microsoft verbatim on this 3% number, and nobody but Microsoft knows where the "3% average" number comes from.

Anyhow, I'm not a fanboy for any side in the console game, because to me, a console is just another product in my house, it is not some lifestyle choice or anything of the sort. And I understand that Sony's PS2 had a not-so-shiny launch (I got one with the dreaded Blue Disk Read Error) . A console is just an entertainment system. The problem I had was with Microsoft proclaiming this to be the "greatest launch in history." The sheer unmitigated gaul of it is nauseating and says "we like to put out great PR more than we like our customers"

Systems in short supply, hard drive vs. no hard drive debacle, 60.00 games, and the fact that new technology is not even needed right now, and they have the nerve to say this was a succesful launch!?! For every 1 person that got a 360, 12 didn't get one, and thats succesful??? I still can't find one! Not that I need one, I'm very happy with my xbox and gamecube, and my Dreamcast is still my favorite system! New systems should have been still years away, and are game prices going to go up everytime we launch new hardware? Oh wow!! better sound and prettier graphics, has anyone seen any innovation or originality in any of the new games? NO! Just sequels, movie tie-ins, me too games and crap!!!! What do we need a new system for when you're just playing the same ole games???? Xbox360 or PS3??? forget about it!!!!! Let's just wait until Sega and Nintendo team up and make a game system, then we'll have something to talk about!

Explain me something: How is it possible that Microsoft has the Audacity to say "The Greatest Launch in the History of Video Games"? What records did you freaking brake? LOL, so I guess having very little units available at launch is "great", which is misleading because it makes people think that there is a lot of demand, when in fact, it's the production that was little (or were there too many defective units?).

The worst statement I've ever read, is the Motto next to every 360 Kiosk, where the 360 games are being displayed: "The best gaming line-up ever". How come Microsoft has the Chutzpah to say that? Now that's what I call too much balls, but less than half a brain, as there are very few Japanese games available right now (read: games that are good, or worth the 60 dollars spent on them), and the future doesn't look so good.

Microsoft should stop saying they *have* good games, and actually *Get* some good games.

A coworker preordered before release... The latest response.. no new units until April.... so... six months after 'release' the preorders still aren't filled, and they aren't even shipping more for another month! I find that hard to even be labelled a 'successfull launch', let alone a 'great launch'. Forget about 'greatest launch'.

i see xbox fanboy after fanboy with diarrhea of the mouth. ps3 is not even out yet, and we have retards declaring victory one over the other. lets put it straight here, nobody has a clue whats going to happen. personaly i am going to own most likely all 3 including ps3 and revolution, but i cant even find a premium right now. the one thing i do know is that the 360 launch is one of the biggest debacles in gaming history.

Segasan, your completely rite. Games have gone nowhere in the past 5years maybe even longer. As for Halo its an ok game of a console fps, but we all know fps were made for pc's, i would want call of duty any day over halo2.The next gen metroid prime is going to be better than Halo3.

But in saying that the xbox 360 is going to be a way better console than the PS3, for consumers and developers. Microsoft just need more first party games. Sony lie in there press conferences about the '4D' and how they will rule the video game world.

They make promises they cant deliver (i.e. the killzone2 trailer at E3 last year). I personally hate watching game trailers that only show prerender footage, "cutscenes", sonys E3 was completely built on that concept last year. Microsoft had gameplay which is a far more honest way of showing a game off.

shame your customers dont have a clue what those plans are , sony lost me after my spell with SOE and starwars(crazy how much a small part of a company can effect a customers pov on the whole company)
i hate all this in the dark stuff with MS tho, we all know your gonna update the hell out of the 360, but a lot more light on the situation would go along way.

in response to themadbarber's claims that you will need a new tv to play the ps3 is a flat out lie. bluray works with any current tv. (the same hdtv that you use the 360 on.) I can also tell you that there is nowhere around my area that has the 360 in-stock and I refuse to drive 2 hours to indianapolis to look for one when gamestop, gamecrazy, bestbuy, circuit city, and walmart should be able to stock them by now. I also would like to note that i will be interested in both whenever I am able to get my hands on them. Everyone needs to stop trying to predict which one will win the console battle

No. The X360 didn't have the greatest launch. It's March and I still can't find an XBOX 360.

The XBOX launch was pretty good, although the Duke wasn't that great for THPS2X or DOA3.

The GCN launch was OK, but the past 4 years have been dreadful.

The PS2 launch sucked cos I was suckered into buying one so early (January 2001)

Now the Dreamcast launch, that kicked arse. Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure consumed me for a month or so.

Let's see the xbox360 is a great machine.Sony,The big N and Microsoft lie about their systems to sum degree. I want to see from game Info. and real live pics. Right now the only one been honest more about their system is micro. they are at least try to fix probelms and not drag on launch dates or act like they do not care about us.by the way n and s are not showing their hand so why should M.everyone tries to copy evryone show what you can do when everyone is out .That is good naot bad.thx you for your time.

If microsoft waited as long as Sony to release the PS3 imagine the power of the xbox 360 in Nov 2006, i mean the machine is virtually the same in power and it was shown with playable games in May 2005 released 6 months later with a advanced xbox live service/ market place. Basically the technology was way ahead of anything Sony had on the shop floor at E3 2005. Im waitng for Fony to put a guide button on there bumerang joypad and copy other aspects like they always do.

I think in the press release when its talking about "the greatest launch in the history of video games" I believe there referring to the game lineup, Microsoft even admitted there launch didn't go as swimmingly as hoped, due to shortages.

And the rumor that Bungie is working on 2 games possibly might be true as I read an article in my EGM saying that they got the skinny on the first Full Xbox 1 downloadable game coming to Live this Summer, and its Halo 1, hopefully they'll add Online Multiplayer or even Online Co-Op!! since it is now possible to do that with the 360's Guide!
And the second game is supposedly Forerunner as posted on www.TeamXbox.com

I'm happy with my 360 from Every10Minutes, and eventhough I got mine 3 days before launch no problems and I really like how it looks on my LNR329D- 32" Samsung LCD and I will probably get a PS3 as sake I collect every console for each Generation sames goes for Revolution as I love the Mario games, and Smash Bros. I don't really care for Sony thanks to this BluRay AACS crap there pulling with Copy Protection. And the DRM Scandal on Sony BMG CD's which Sony pulled off, but was forced to remove the protection. That simply shows that Sony can't be trusted

Everyone that said 1080p would be for the games on the PS3, wrong, Test Developers admitted that 1080p would be very hard for the PS3 to pull off since it would pull the framerate down very badly, that being said, 1080p will only exist for the BluRay Movies played on the PS3, although I'm not really for Sony's decision to back the AACS Copy Protection implemented by the MPAA, I will probably still get one, but this might be the last console I ever get from Sony, I got rid of all my other Sony products anyways...

What is the matter with you all? Can't you see the changes are beginning to occur in this competition? What prove do you all have to say that PS3 is much better? As far as I know, PS3 will be a pain in the back. Copy protection still become PS3's most annoying problem. I still confuse what is in the mind of Sony. This competition is definitely a slaughtered time. And the slaughtered victim will be Sony. Cell powered consoled? Cell powered my as_ .

It's easy to comment about Sony's launch announcement, since we all work for Sony and really know what is going on between both companies (Sony and Microsoft). Since Bill Gates and Ken Kutaragi tells us all of their marketing secrets. Whatever! Stop crying over who is better than who. At least be open minded enough to understand, it's all speculation and marketing spinning things out of proportion. Till all three consoles have been released and we will see who is victor - sales numbers speak louder than words, no matter what anyone thinks. If you don't sale as much, then YOU SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Period.

Also, everyone is reading what ever they see the PR department dishes out in regards to the true capabilities of HD-DVD and Blu-ray. But is everyone engineers who are creating, testing and producing the actual hardware. NO! So, no one really knows the true capabilities and its limits. News tend to spin the true content to serve the purpose of what hot topic will get the most reviews. Until we have an engineer rep speaking on behalf of each hardware and answering all of our questions in regards to which is better and what are their true limits. No matter what, it still boils down to what will in the end generate the great return, not just bottom-line, but the most profit over the long haul...not today, not tomorrow, but for the next 5 - 10 years. Rant as you may, but please don't regurgitate whatever you hear or read, since you are a rep for gamers out there, and you sound stupid. Gamers are not dumb, well at least most of us are not. So unless you know it for a fact and have the hard data and test results and sales number collected from every retailers' database, just shut up...you are making the rest of us that are quite intellegent seem dumb and people will continue to treat us as so with false promise and advertising. If they realized that we are not to be taken lightly nor advantage of...then we all wouldn't complain so much about how things suck or blah blah blah. Cry yourself a river in your own little corner, we don't want to hear it.

I've had my 360 since jan - only time the system froze was with doa 4 but the patch a month later fixed this ( 2 patches, second patch for balancing the fighters) im very impressed with my xbox 360 console and their expanding xbox live marketplace. Remember Microsoft is very powerful owning 95 percent of the operating systems in personal computers in the world lol. Remember that the next time you Fony fan boys - when u message ur Fony gaystation 2 mates using microsofts msn messenger. and there other media.

I'm not saying I like the PS3, because I don't.
But MAN ALIVE Microsoft organized I think one of the worst
launches in video game HISTORY!

Personally, if anyone didn't buy Sony but buy Microsoft XBOX 360 and said those things above, I'll say that person is just saying something nonsense. I mean....what the hell problem does anyone have if Microsoft is launching a video game console? All industries have the same right. So unless you are a sceptical person on Microsoft's point of view, I think it is better for you just to back out from this forum. Playstation might be the best in previous decade. But surely that decade is over. And a new paradigm is born. Microsoft is doubling their mistake rate so they can build a better console. Can't you see that?

A person who feels that he is not wrong at all, might be a person who is totally wrong. Let me ask you, Nick. What console do you buy? Or you just say something bull_h_t in this forum?? What can prove you that you have the best perspective in this forum?

I just had to say, after reading all these comments that are dripping with fanboyism and illiteracy, it's frightening that people really get this worked up over crap like videogame consoles. I will say that I have all three previous consoles, and while I have had the opportunity to get a 360, I did not. Why? Because I wanted a Hi-Def video player without an add on. I'm waiting for the PS3 for now, but I will probably get a 360 when the price drops. In reference to the battling on the technology front, there are parts, like the XDR memory structure in the PS3, that if optimized, will show the Xbox360's dated memory structure, among other bandwidth improvements. These consoles are equal, if they had been launched at the same time. I also wouldn't say that the 360 has exculsive games to beat PS3, why? Because I don't know a single person that would take Halo 3 over Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid. Online play, I don't have the money for, and a LOT of people don't have the money for it, at least on the Xbox. I've always liked that, even though Sony didn't have a better online structure, all of the non-MMO games were free to play online, and I hope it's the same with the PS3, because, a structure really doesn't matter to me, when I can't afford it.

Honestly, I'm waiting to see how things go at E3, after the announcement that the Revo would be fully unveiled, and (I'm hoping for) some playable PS3 games. If Microsoft is really planning to win this round, they're gonna have to pull out some pretty big guns to take on PS3 AND the Revolution.

To be honest, I think it is better that everyone is not buying consoles first. Let us just see the result. Who knows. Maybe Sony will loose in 3 months? Or maybe even Xbox is the winner?
